ENVIRONMENT
Children thrive when they become the lead participant in their acquisition of knowledge. We are here to provide a rich environment for the children and guide each child through this environment along her unique path of discovery and self-development. Social interactions arise naturally as children work together or side by side. Everything, from waiting your turn in line to helping a friend tie his shoelaces, provides the children with opportunities to develop peaceful social skills.

In the Primary classroom, a child interacts with the environment through hands-on exploration. This interaction leads to a profound level of learning. Concrete experiences that engage the mind, the body and the senses coupled with self-motivated exploration and self-discovery lead to true integration of knowledge and a life-long love of learning. The children truly make the environment their own, choosing independently from activities that they have been shown by their teachers. They pass freely from practical activities such as cutting vegetables, washing a table, sewing or sweeping, to working with language and mathematics, geography and botany.
DAILY SCHEDULE
The school day starts at 8:30 am and typical morning schedule would consist of a roughly three-hour uninterrupted work period where children freely choose activities from the prepared environment, with the teacher providing individual lessons as needed, followed by a brief group gathering for activities like song or a story. Lunch is next followed by outdoor time. Afternoons include nap time for our nappers, and an opportunity for the older children to continue on with their lessons and work.
MOVING TO ELEMENTARY
When moving up from Primary to Elementary, the children are guided in the next steps with shadow days in their new classroom. They enter that new environment with some familiar materials and lots of new materials. They are taught by Guides with a specific understanding of their stage of development. Trained Montessorians spend many hours of their training observing signs of readiness in order to understand what this actually means in terms of development. We work closely with the Primary Guide before a child moves up into the elementary environment.
